Ace music composer and Oscar winner A R Rahman will be performing live at Kozhikode on May 3 to express solidarity with HIV Positive orphaned children. The show titled ‘Jai Ho’ is the’first mega music show’ by Rahman after he won two Oscars for’ Slumdog Millionaire’. Over 50 well-known musicians, besides Rahman, will be participating in the event, which is being organised by the NGO Global Kerala initiative’Keraleeyam’ for rehabilitating HIV positive orphaned children. Rahman said he was happy to be associated with”the cause”. He said he had been wanting to perform in Kerala for the last 15 years. Though he had cancelled at least seven shows, which were to be held this year in various parts of the country as he would be in the US for at least six months. He however, wanted the Kerala show to be held as it was”irresistible”. Malayalam singers are gifted, dedicated and their foundation very strong, he said. Rahman said his late father, R K Shekhar, who was composer and music conductor of Malayalam films, gave his soul to malayalam film music. Works of music directors like S Dakshinamoorthy, late Devarajan master, A T Ummer and his father, were the ones he liked. “I also adore veteran singer K J Jesudas,”he added The team that had visited the city in February had given an inkling of the kind of show A.R. Rahman Live would be. “We don’t know what Rahman has in mind, this is the first show after the Oscars. He would definitely want to give this show a completely new feel, something that has never been experienced before. He might even have a unique theme for the show. It’s Rahman, anything is possible,’’ Shailesh, who was in charge of production, said. “Normally, a Rahman show will have ten big singers and 40-odd musicians. However, for this show, we feel it might be bigger. We will get a clear idea after we meet the man himself,’’ he added.

ANOTHER DOCTORATE For RAHMAN

Awards and appreciation are just keeping on pouring in for the most talented music maker of India-A.R.Rahman. After the decision of Anna University in Tamilnadu to confer a doctorate in Media Sciences to the composer, it is the turn of a foreign university to do the same. The syndicate of Middlesex University in London has now announced an honorary doctorate for A.R. Rahman will be presented with this prestigious honour at the Middlesex University’s annual graduation ceremony to be held in July. The decision of the syndicate was conveyed to the music maestro by Joe Victor who is the regional director of the Middlesex University. This doctorate gives way to the association of Rahman with the university getting stronger. For sometime now Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory situated in Chennai was holding discussions with the officials of the Middlesex University for a joint music degree course. The efforts of the Conservatory have paid off as the proposed course will start next year. Now the interested students can do the first two years of the Middlesex University’s Bachelor Of Arts honours programe for Music Composition and Music Performance in Chennai and the final year at London.

AR Rahman's Live in concert programe has been changed by the co-operation of kerala due to Election Problems, they take decision that Kozhikode will be more suitable for his programme.

This is the first music fest Rahman attending after his Oscar achievement . Other than the famous playback singers many famous actors would sing along. The organisers of the fest is Global Kerala Initiative-Keraleeyam. Another Oscar winner Resul Pookuty will also be honoured in the fest.

The Tamil Film Industry where many have been debating the issue of who’s greater between ‘Ilayaraja’ and his protégé ‘A.R. Rahman’. None are least or greater than anyone. If you ask us, it would be the apt reply. Perhaps, we’re sure there isn’t any big reason other than this.

'I was bit disappointed watching media channels especially certain websites that were continually passing abusive comments by comparing Ilayaraja sir with me. He’s the great master of all times and I’m nothing when compared to him… Elder Musicians like him laid the foundation and I’ve represented them for these awards’.
